Holidaymakers at Gites in France may be curious to know that, by definition, a gite is a French word that refers to a place to lie down, and appropriately, it was originally a term used to describe rudimentary overnight accommodation, even a youth hostel or lodgings for horseback riders. Moreover, these days, it is naturally a traditional country cottage that has been updated into self-catering rental accommodation, specifically those that can be found in villages and in the countryside. A villa, on the other hand, is more a term that is used to define the nature of the building concerned as opposed to the function thereof, usually a residence. Both terms are often used interchangeably nowadays, however, along with holiday let or chalet.
